“What struck us most was the fact that the atmosphere was so warm and friendly. Smiling waitresses made our visit wonderfully warm and happy. Service was excellent and the food superb. We even met the friendly proprietor and personally learnt a lot  about how their superb wines are made - which is quite different to anyone else’s because they put so much care into the process.”

Peter and Jane Barrington-Smith, Johannesburg.

“We loved being able to sample wine by the glass – while we ate – thus enjoying both a  wine-tasting AND a gourmet meal. Prices were surprisingly inexpensive – not even £4 for a quarter of a bottle of their stunning flagship wine, the famous Auret – so we felt incredibly privileged.”

Simon Harbord, Norwich, England.

“A five-star experience at two-star prices!"

JD, New York.

“We were bowled over by the view, the exceptional food and what can only be described as friendly, family service. The menu was brilliant – just like you would get in the top restaurants of the world – and just as delicious, if not more so. Your chef is a complete MASTER!   As visitors, we came away with unforgettable memories of a wonderful lunch in one of the most beautiful and relaxed venues in the world.”

Francois Dereux, Lyons, France.

“It is hard to find the words to describe my wonderful experience in your restaurant recently. We sat down in your warm and comfortable surroundings to enjoy what must be one of the best views in Africa – the rolling hills and peaceful vineyards of Devon Valley with its stupendous backdrop of Stellenbosch mountains.  The menu was pure delight, and very creative, as it not only had a host of gourmet dishes but also traditional dishes like butternut soup, blended to perfection with just the right amount of herbs and spices to make it the best I have ever had, anywhere.  So too, the bobotie was utterly delicious, beautifully presented with a host of exciting flavours, and served with delicious vegetables and homemade bread.  To savour food like this, prepared by a qualified Executive Chef, was a rare treat and to combine it with award-winning Clos Malverne wines was pairing at its finest. I had no idea that we could
buy these top wines by the glass – representing a quarter of a bottle – and the ability to enjoy these fine wines in this way was unique, turning the event into a exclusive wine tasting as well. Prices were really modest while service was utterly friendly and warm. The experience exceeded that of virtually any other restaurant I have visited - anywhere in the world.  And all this was done unpretentiously, and creatively, making it a highly memorable occasion. I cannot wait to come back – and, of course, tell my friends.”

"We have been to Clos Malverne twice now, in the last two weeks, having read reviews in Eat Out. This is really a top place to call in at for lunch, or for a special evening. Everything is as perfect as it should be. We called in on Tuesday lunch, one of the first to test the winter menu specials. Although we were the only three diners, we were made to feel special, never hurried, and every whim, was attended to. The food is first class, the farm wine is wonderful, and the prices, for what you get, are excellent. Definitely put this one on your list."

"We always find it difficult to choose from a huge menu: it's a hit and miss situation, since not all the dishes can be good. Here you will not find that problem. With such a small menu, you know everything is fresh and each plate received the same special attention. We were a table of four and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our courses, from the ostrich carpaccio, chicken citrus salad and risotto, to the duck, curry and fillet. Not to mention the desserts: fondant and fabulous butternut and pistachio parfait with a very good butterscotch sauce. Yes, one can become picky, but it is very refreshing to see a couple of new combinations by an enthusiastic, young chef. The restaurant is still very new and will get sorted in no time. We had good, attentive service with wines available by the glass or bottle at very affordable prices. Everything on the menu, including the wine, was very good value for money by any standards. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant on a regular basis. Well done and good luck."
